DEMOCRATIC COMMITTEE CHAIRS IN CENTRAL TEXAS RELEASE STATEMENT OF SUPPORT FOR TEXAS STATE REPRESENTATIVES WHO BROKE QUORUM

The chairs of Democratic Party Committees in six central Texas counties co-signed the open letter in a show of solidarity with Texas legislators who fled the state on Monday.

Democrats in the Texas State Legislature continue to capture the nation’s attention following their controversial decision to flee the state in order to break quorum during a special legislative session called by Governor Abbott.

In response to the move, chairs overseeing Democratic Party in Anderson, Austin, Bastrop, Burleson, Caldwell, and Hill counties released a joint statement of support, which reads, in part:

“We…condemn the actions of Governor Abbott and his associates with respect to this bill, the special legislative session, and the resulting walkout.

“We applaud the members of the legislature who risk their livelihoods and political careers in this profound act of civil service.

“We renew our dedication to supporting the Democratic representatives and candidates in Texas paving the way towards progress in our communities.

“Texans deserve leaders who will go to great lengths to fulfill the high calling of their office and we stand by the Democrats who are doing just that in Washington D.C. today.”

The six county chairs—Sharon Davis, Pat Burns, Steve Chamberlain, Linda Arbuckle, Alfredo Munoz, and Thomas Hanson—coordinated efforts to release the statement as a re-affirmation of their commitment to support Democratic leadership, up-and-coming candidates, and voters’ rights within their own districts and across the state of Texas.
